Twas the night before school started after a long Christmas vacation, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The childrens clothing was hung with care,
In hopes that the bright yellow school bus would soon would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While mommy laid awake with visions of them boarding the school bus danced in her head.
Mommy in her ‘snuggie' and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But the school bus driving away!
With a little old bus driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be my alarm didn't go off.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
I whistled, and shouted, and called my children by name!
"Now Michael! now Logan! Get up and go!
We missed the school bus and must hurry! To school we must go!
"Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all, so mommy can get some work done today!"
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the school the coursers they flew,
With their backpacks full of papers, homework and lunchboxes too.
And suddenly all too soon, in, I heard on the front lawn
The prancing and pawing of each little foot.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
In the front door My children came with a bound.
They were full of energy from their first day,
And their coats, boots, hats and mittens were all dropped and left on my front doorstep in disarray.
A bundle of papers and empty lunchboxes were flung on their backs,
And they looked like a peddler, just opening their backpacks.
My children's eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
Their cheeks were like roses, their little noses looked just like a cherry!
Their droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the milk dribble on their chin was as white as the snow.
The wad of gum held tight in their teeth,
And the bubble gum encircled his head like a wreath.
They had a round little face and a little flat belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!
My children were chubby and plump, from all that Christmas candy they were jolly little self,
And I laughed when I saw them, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had plenty to dread.
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And emptied all my cupboards of food, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up from the table he rose!
He sprang from their seat, to his brother he gave a whistle,
And away they all flew down the hall, like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
"Mom we are home, and to all a good-night!"
